Read your own site like a customer before you share it ยท #5
You know your business by heart, so your website will always read clearly to you. You know what each service means, where you work, and how someone should reach you. A new customer knows none of that. They land on your page with a job to do, a phone in hand, and no patience for guessing. Reading your own site like that customer is the fastest honest check you can do, and it takes only a short, focused pass.
Start on your phone, away from your desk
Open your site on your phone, not on the computer where you usually work. Stand somewhere you do not do business, if you can, and pretend a friend just gave you your own name. Search for your business, tap the result, and watch what loads first. Does the page state your business name and what you do in plain words? Can you tell, without scrolling far, whether you serve the place where that customer lives?
Your free website is built to be mobile optimized and fast loading, with your services, photos, hours, and service area on it. This check is how you confirm those pieces still say what you meant them to say after words and photos have been updated over time.
Run the customer checklist
Work through this list in order, and write down anything that slows you down. Do not fix as you go. Finish the pass first, so you see the site the way a stranger sees it, from start to finish.
- Can you say what the business does after reading only the opening screen?
- Is there a phone number you can tap to call, and a contact form that is easy to find?
- Are your services listed in the words a customer would use, not only in trade words?
- Are your hours clear, and do they match how you actually work today?
- Does the page name your service area, so the right visitors know to reach out?
- Can you find a map, directions, or links to your social profiles without hunting?
- Do the photos show your real work, your team, or your place, and do they look clear on a phone?
- Is there one clear next step on the page, instead of several competing ones?
If you paused on any item, a customer will pause there too. That pause is useful information, not a failure. It tells you exactly which line, photo, or detail to update next.
Fix the words a stranger cannot follow
Owners often write the way they talk to other owners. Customers do not share that shorthand. Read each service name out loud and ask whether someone outside your trade would know what they would get. If a heading needs explaining, rewrite it in plain language and keep the detail underneath it. Keep sentences short. Name the service, who it is for, and what happens when someone asks for it.
Apply the same test to your opening lines. A clear opening does not need big claims. It needs your business name, what you do, and where you do it, stated early enough that a visitor does not have to work to find them. That clarity also gives search engines clean words to read, which is part of the SEO ready setup your site launches with.
Check the basics you can update yourself
Hours, photos, and text are the pieces that drift first. A holiday change gets posted somewhere else and never reaches the site. An old photo stays long after the work it shows has changed. Before launch, we walk you through updating text, photos, and hours, so routine changes never have to wait on us. Use that walkthrough here. Update what is stale, replace a blurry photo with a clearer one taken in good light, and remove anything that no longer matches the business you run today.
Then do one last phone pass. Tap the call button. Open the contact form. Follow your own map and social links. Confirm each one goes where you expected. A site can look right and still lose a customer at the last tap, and this is the pass that catches it.
If this check shows your current site is hard to follow, or if you do not have a site to check at all, that is a good place to start from. Apply for your free website, pick a design and your colors, and tell us what you want the site to do for you. A real person on our team reviews every application, and if your business qualifies, we build your website for free.
